The Molekule Air Pro RX air purifier is a device intended for medical purposes that is used to destroy bacteria and viruses in the air by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Air Pro RX also satisfies performance criteria outlined in FDA guidance for use in helping to destroy SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 virus.
The Molekule Air Pro RX air purifier employs a photo-electrochemical oxidation (PECO) ultraviolet air purification technology that destroys bacteria, viruses and mold in air in medical facilities. The Molekule Air Pro RX air purifier includes a pre-filter and low energy ultraviolet lights (UV-A 320-400 nm), and a catalytic filter.
PECO is an air purification technology that fully oxidizes bacteria, viruses, and mold. PECO works by shining UV-A light on the surface of the catalytic filter to initiate a chemical reaction that generates hydroxyl radicals. These radicals combine with microbiological contaminants, such as bacteria, viruses, and mold spores that are captured on the filter. Once combined, a chemical reaction takes place killing the contaminants.
Air purifying devices are intended for medical purposes to kill pathogens/microorganisms in the air by exposure to UV radiation or remove them through filtration.
FDA believes that certain sterilizers, disinfectant devices, and air purifiers falling within the scope of this guidance (see Section III) may help reduce this risk of viral exposure based on our current understanding of these devices and SARS-CoV-2.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the 510(k) premarket notification for the company’s new medical-grade air purifier, Air Pro RX, classifying it as a 510(k) Class II Medical Device.
Air Pro RX uses Molekule's patented Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO) technology, and has demonstrated greater than 5-log, or 99.999% reduction, of RNA virus MS2 at 24 hours as a proxy virus for SARS-CoV-2.
