Alleviate your Arthritic Pain

Physical Therapy can help with Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common words we hear to describe one’s pain, whether it is on the news, in the paper or even overhearing someone in the grocery store. So, what exactly is arthritis? Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints that may cause pain or stiffness throughout your day. The most common type of arthritis is Osteoarthritis (OA). This form of arthritis is “wear and tear” on your cartilage that causes increased friction between your joints resulting in pain & discomfort.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) osteoarthritis affects over 32.5 million adults. So, if you think you suffer from this you are not alone! Some signs & symptoms of OA are pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion & swelling. Increased risk factors for OA are increased age, gender (female>male), being overweight, and genetics. Now, of course some of these risk factors you can not change, but the most important treatment to prevent OA is to simply MOVE!

As Physical & Occupational therapists, we are professionally trained and educated to help patients move and increase their physical activity in a rehabilitative way. Whether that is with walking, weight training, balance training or band exercises increasing your blood flow and time spent on physical activity a day is crucial. Physical Therapists also can help improve your flexibility, endurance, and perform massage to an affected area to help alleviate your arthritic pain. Research has shown that at least 150 minutes of moderate level exercise can seriously help prevent the onset and worsening of OA in one’s joints. It is important to note that everyone’s definition of “moderate level exercise” is different. So whatever you do, whether it's running, biking, walking, weight training or even yoga get out there and MOVE!
