Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is used by physical therapists to help relieve pain and inflammation. During the cupping treatment, physical therapists place special cups onto your skin to create suction. The cups sit for 5 minutes causing your skin to become red and expand your blood vessels. The suction helps to improve blood circulation, reduce pain and alleviate muscle tension to the areas where the cups are placed. Cupping may also help form new tissue and create new blood vessels in the tissue.

The cups may be made of:

Cupping can help to alleviate neck pain, lower back pain, migraines, and stiffness. Cupping therapy is a form of deep tissue massage. At Reddy Care, cupping treatment may come after your physical therapist provides massage therapy. Your physical therapist will leave the massage lotion or oil on to help create a better connection between the cups and your skin.

If you are receiving cupping therapy it is important to continue with your physical therapy treatment too. Your physical therapist will encourage you to continue your exercises and stretches to improve your mobility, strength, stability and range of motion. There are small side effects you may experience while using the cupping treatment. These side effects may include: bruising, mild soreness, and minimal pain. If you experience any of these side effects, inform your physical therapist.

At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy, our physical therapists are trained in modern cupping techniques. For more information on if cupping can help you or a loved one, call our office today!
