Dementia and Physical Therapy

Dementia and Physical Therapy

When a loved one is suffering from dementia it can be stressful and upsetting for everyone involved.  While dementia, unfortunately, isn’t curable getting the right treatment to manage symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life is important and can help ease what otherwise can be a very distressing situation.

Physical therapy in many cases has been shown to slow the cognitive decline of patients suffering from dementia due to the increase of blood flow to the brain during the exercises set forth by the therapist.  Patients with dementia can also experience a decline in mobility, experiencing different balance and gait issues, which can also be addressed with physical therapy. A therapist can evaluate a patient's gait and work with them to improve their balance and coordination, lowering the risk of falls. For patients experiencing a loss in motor functions, physical therapy can help with specific motor function training to enhance body mechanics. Other treatments like manual therapy and pelvic floor rehabilitation can help soothe other common pains that may be affecting a dementia patient.  The social connection between therapist and patient can also be therapeutic in helping patients build new relationships.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy, we work closely with your loved one’s doctor and/or caregiver to design the best plan of care. The first step is an evaluation to determine the patient's needs and abilities. Treatments are personalized based on this and will often incorporate the patients’ unique interests.
