Dyspraxia: Spotting the Signs and How OT Can Help
Dyspraxia is a neurological condition that affects how the brain processes information to produce physical movement. It impacts fine motor skills, gross motor skills, coordination, and motor planning , but importantly, it has no bearing on a person's intelligence. Many people living with dyspraxia are highly capable individuals who simply experience the world through a body that doesn't always respond the way they intend.
How dyspraxia presents in children
In infants and toddlers, dyspraxia can appear as subtle early signs that are sometimes dismissed as typical developmental variation. These may include:
- Unusual or stiff body posture
- Heightened sensitivity to sound and general irritability
- Difficulty with feeding and settling into a sleep routine
- Excessive or uncontrolled movement of the limbs
As children reach key developmental milestones, delays often become more noticeable. Parents may observe challenges with crawling, walking, toilet training, self-feeding, and getting dressed independently.
Further into childhood, other signs tend to emerge:
- Struggles with fine motor tasks such as writing, drawing, or assembling puzzles
- Poor coordination that makes activities like jumping, hopping, skipping, or catching a ball particularly difficult
- Repetitive movements like hand-flapping or fidgeting, and general restlessness
- Messy eating habits that persist beyond typical developmental stages
- A tendency to avoid physical activity, which can affect overall fitness
How dyspraxia presents in adults
Dyspraxia does not disappear with age, many adults live with its effects without ever having received a formal diagnosis. Common experiences include:
- Difficulty maintaining good posture and an unusual gait
- Balance issues and a general sense of physical clumsiness
- Poor hand-eye coordination and increased fatigue after physical tasks
- Challenges learning and retaining new physical or procedural skills
- Difficulty with planning, organisation, and time management
- Struggles with everyday tasks like handwriting, typing, or personal grooming
- Social anxiety or reduced confidence in group settings
What causes dyspraxia?
The precise cause of dyspraxia remains unclear, and it is widely accepted that there is unlikely to be a single root cause. Research suggests that it involves differences in the way the brain develops and communicates with the body — but the mechanisms are complex and not yet fully understood.
The role of occupational therapy
Occupational therapy is one of the most effective and widely used approaches for supporting individuals with dyspraxia. Rather than focusing on a cure, occupational therapists work to improve day-to-day functioning, build confidence, and reduce the impact of dyspraxia on everyday life.
