Lower Back and Leg Pain

Sciatica is one of the most common problems noted in the elderly population due to weakening of bones and muscles, which can result in tremendous lower back and leg pain. Patients with severe sciatica can cause the patient to be bedridden and make it difficult for prolonged walking, standing, and sitting.

Physical therapy can relieve severe back pain by performing stretching and exercises, which relieves compression on the sciatic nerve root.

Physical therapy can also correct posture in elderly patients by providing visual feedback, which is also a common cause of lower back pain. Physical therapy helps to build muscle strength on the lower back and both legs which improves the patient’s functional activities and reduces their risk of a fall.
