Multiple sclerosis (M.S)

Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (M.S) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes progressive damage to nerves all over your body. It is a neurological disease that causes your body's immune system to mistakenly attack the myelin sheath which is the protective covering on your nerve cells.

This causes scarring which in turn decreases the nerve’s ability to transmit signals properly, affecting nerve functions around the body. Patients with multiple sclerosis often experience bouts of activity followed by periods of little or no activity. Besides fatigue, some other common symptoms are:

Symptoms will vary as no two cases of MS are the same because it can affect different parts of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

There is no cure for MS and getting a multiple sclerosis diagnosis can be scary and daunting but getting the right care early can help reduce the severity of symptoms and improve your quality of life. Current treatments are aimed at reducing symptoms and usually include a combination of medical and rehabilitation management.

Physical therapy can help immensely in improving function and independence in patients with MS. Besides recommending and helping with any assistive devices the patient may need, therapists may provide massage or ultrasound treatment to relieve pain. Different exercises and stretches prescribed by the physical therapist can help improve range-of-motion and function. There are many different modalities a physical therapist can include in a patient’s treatment plans depending on their individual needs and symptoms.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy we have a team of therapists that can help design a program to help manage your MS.  Incorporating treatment with one of our occupational therapists can also be valuable in helping you adapt and take part in daily tasks as you manage your symptoms.
