National Scoliosis Awareness Month

Scoliosis Physical Therapy

As June is national scoliosis awareness month, we thought it was only appropriate to take a closer look at scoliosis and how physical therapy can assist in treating scoliosis.

Scoliosis is simply a sideways curvature of the spine. This can cause varying degrees of discomfort and back pain.  Patients with severe scoliosis may also experience trouble breathing, ribs that noticeably stick out more on one side, and uneven shoulder blades.

Treatment for scoliosis is based on a few factors:

Bracing is a common treatment option for scoliosis, more severe cases may require surgery. In mild cases, physical therapy may be all that’s needed to assist a patient with their particular alignment issues. Physical therapy can also be used in addition to more aggressive treatments to augment results. Using different treatments, like massage, and electrical stimulation, your physical therapist will help relieve any back pain or stiffness caused by your scoliosis. They can also work with you on a program of exercises and stretches to help improve function and range of motion.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy, we have a team of therapists experienced and skilled in treating back issues like scoliosis. Getting treatment early can help prevent worsening of the curve and other related health conditions, but it’s never too late to start. Give us a call today to find out about our different therapy options.
