Physical Therapy assists with Balance Disorders

Balance Disorders and Physical Therapy

Balance disorders when not handled properly can lead to falls and can be very dangerous. Balance issues can develop as the result of injury, or as the result of a disease affecting one of the structures in your body that is important to balance. Structures like the ears, muscles, eyes, and nervous system all play an important role in helping you balance.

There is a significant link between your gait, the way you walk, and your ability to balance. Gait therapy, by a trained physical therapist, can be an effective way to manage balance issues and prevent falls.  They can look for any issues in your gait, or the way you walk, and help correct them. Physical therapy can actually help you improve your balance with specific exercises. Physical therapists are experts in movement and can help you maintain safe functional mobility.  They can spot potential issues with your strength and posture that could be contributing to your balance issues.

Treatment with a physical therapist will start with a one-on-one evaluation, from there they will create a personalized plan to treat specific issues you are having.  Treatment will often consist of:

There are many different modalities that your therapist can use depending on the specific cause and symptoms of your balance issues.  In general, physical therapy can help you feel more confident on your feet and reduce your risk of falling.
