Physical Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of the hand. When the median nerve is compressed, symptoms can include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and arm.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Numbness, particularly at night
A feeling the fingers are useless or swollen
A tingling sensation or pain in the fingers

As symptoms worsen, people might feel:

Tingling during the day, especially with certain activities such as talking on the phone, reading a book or newspaper, or driving

Mild to severe pain, sometimes worse at night
Some loss of movement in the hand

Hand weakness may make it difficult to grasp small objects or perform other manual tasks

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Diabetes
Thyroid dysfunction
Fluid retention from pregnancy or menopause
High blood pressure
Autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis
Fractures or trauma to the wrist

Your Physical therapist can recommend something called “gliding” exercises. These focus on nerves and tendons. The goal is to help reduce pain and increase mobility.Your therapist might also suggest a brace. You’ll wear this at night to keep your wrist straight, and you might wear it during the day, when you’re doing activities that may worsen your symptoms.
