Sciatica can be Managed with Physical Therapy

Sciatica and Physical Therapy

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by the pinching or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica pain originates in the lower back and radiates down through the buttocks and to the leg. It is typically described as a constant burning sensation or shooting pain.

Sciatica is most often caused by a disc in the lower back.  The herniation puts pressure on the surrounding nerves, including the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, it extends from the lower spine all the way down to the heels of the feet.  It connects the spinal cord with the skin and muscles of the leg, thigh, and foot.

Sciatica can be quite painful and uncomfortable but can be managed with physical therapy. A physical therapist will work with you to create a tailored program to help with your specific sciatica symptoms. Targeted exercises are a big part of any physical therapy program, but some other treatments include:

Your therapist will determine which modalities are appropriate for you.
