Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is a condition where your jaw is limited in movement. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the bones, which are in front of your ears. The temporomandibular joint allows you to move your jaw so you can chew, talk, and yawn. If you have TMD, movements such as chewing or opening and closing your mouth can cause pain in your jaw joints and face muscles.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder may include:

Causes of TMJ disorder may include:

Physical therapy can help restore the natural movement of your jaw as well as relieve the pain.

Reddy Care physical therapists are trained to treat TMJ disorder. Your physical therapy treatment may include: jaw stretches, exercises, relaxation techniques, manual therapy, heat and ice application, ultrasound and education.

Exercises for TMJ pain relief are important to help strengthen jaw muscles, stretch and relax the jaw, increase jaw mobility and reduce jaw clicking. TMJ pain can be relieved by simple life changes such as practicing good posture, eating a soft diet to allow your jaw to rest, and avoiding chewing gum and biting your nails.

If you feel you or a loved one has TMJ disorder, call Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy to help relieve your pain!
