The Silent Battle of Motor Neurone Disease

MND is a group of neurodegenerative disorders that damage motor neurons, the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Over time, these neurons deteriorate and die, causing progressive muscle weakness, loss of function, and difficulty with daily activities. The most common form of MND is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Symptoms of Motor Neurone Disease
MND symptoms vary from person to person but typically include:
- Muscle weakness – Often starting in the hands, legs, or voice.
- Twitching and cramps – Uncontrolled muscle movements.
- Difficulty swallowing and speaking – Speech may become slurred, and eating can become challenging.
- Breathing difficulties – As muscles weaken, breathing can become labored.
- Fatigue – Generalized weakness and exhaustion.
Causes of Motor Neurone Disease
The exact cause of MND is still not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to its development:
- Genetics – About 5-10% of MND cases are inherited.
- Environmental factors – Exposure to toxins, heavy metals, or viral infections may play a role.
- Age and Gender – MND is more common in individuals over 40 and slightly more prevalent in men.
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Physical Therapy for MND
- Maintaining Mobility – Exercises help prevent stiffness and improve movement.
- Muscle Strengthening – Low-impact exercises support weakened muscles.
- Breathing Support – Respiratory exercises enhance lung function.
- Pain Management – Stretching and gentle movements alleviate discomfort.
