Treatment for neck pain

Neck pain can be treated with PT

Your neck is made up of vertebrae that extend from the skull to the upper torso.  The bones, ligaments, and muscles in your neck work together to support your head and allow it to move. The neck is particularly vulnerable to injury, especially in falls, car accidents, or situations where the muscles and ligaments are forced to move outside their normal range.

There are many things that can cause neck pain. Any abnormalities, inflammation, or injury can cause neck pain or stiffness.  Poor posture, slumping or slouching while sitting, injury from exercise, are all factors which can contribute to neck pain.

Many people experience occasional neck pain or stiffness. Most of the time it isn’t serious and can be managed at home and improved within a few days. Some cases are more severe and require a doctor’s care.

Physical therapy can be an important part of your treatment plan for neck pain, helping to optimize the healing process and strengthen tissues. Physical therapists are musculoskeletal experts that can help you improve your neck strength and mobility. Your treatment with a physical therapist will begin with an evaluation, which may include diagnostic imaging, so your therapist can get a good picture of what is going on and how to best manage your condition. Your therapist will then create a personalized treatment plan for you. Treatment can include manual therapy and manipulation, massage therapy, ultrasound technology, and electrical stimulation. Your treatment may also include making lifestyle changes, like adjusting your desk or chair or changing your routine to prevent further injury.
