Understanding Parkinson’s Disease and How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease and How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that typically develops with age and mainly affects a person’s ability to move. It often causes symptoms such as tremors, slowed movement, and problems with balance or coordination. Although the exact cause is not always known, Parkinson’s disease gradually worsens over time. While there is currently no cure, treatments and therapies are available that can help individuals manage symptoms and maintain a better quality of life.

What Causes Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease occurs when certain nerve cells in the brain begin to deteriorate or die. These cells are located in an area called the basal ganglia, which plays a crucial role in controlling movement. Normally, these neurons produce dopamine, a chemical messenger that helps coordinate smooth and controlled muscle movements.

When these dopamine-producing cells become damaged or decrease in number, dopamine levels drop. This imbalance leads to the movement difficulties commonly seen in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Common Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease often develop slowly and may become more noticeable as the condition progresses. While symptoms can vary from person to person, some of the most common signs include:

Tremors
Involuntary shaking that commonly affects the hands, but may also occur in the arms, legs, jaw, or head.

Muscle rigidity
Stiff muscles that remain tense for long periods, which may cause discomfort and limit mobility.

Slowed movement (Bradykinesia)
A noticeable reduction in the speed of movement, making routine activities more challenging.

Balance and coordination problems
Difficulty maintaining stability, which may increase the risk of falls.

How Occupational Therapy Can Support People with Parkinson’s Disease

Occupational therapy is an important part of managing Parkinson’s disease and helping individuals remain independent for as long as possible. Through personalized strategies and therapeutic exercises, occupational therapists focus on improving daily functioning and enhancing overall quality of life.
