What is carpal tunnel?

What exactly is carpal tunnel?

Carpal tunnel is a type of nerve condition that affects the sensation and function of your hand and arm. This condition occurs when one of the major nerves in your hand gets squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. This can happen when the ligaments around this nerve (called the meridian nerve) become tight, placing pressure on the nerve causing tingling and numbness. People with carpal tunnel may also be experiencing neck and shoulder issues, since the meridian nerve exits through the neck and passes down to the fingers.

While Carpal Tunnel can stem from a number of issues and affect anyone, studies show that women and the elderly are more likely to be affected. Things like, repetitive hand use (e.g. typing or writing), your posture, certain health conditions, like diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, are all factors that could cause Carpal Tunnel. Most people experience tingling burning in the fingers (specifically in the thumb, index and middle fingers), weakness or clumsiness in the hands, occasional shock-like sensation that radiates to the thumb and index finger. Symptoms will often start gradually and get worse over time. If pressure on the meridian nerve continues, it can cause further damage, so early diagnosis and treatment are key.

How can physical therapy help?

Physical therapy is a great non-invasive way to treat Carpal Tunnel and alleviate the symptoms connected with it.  A physical therapist will use hands-on treatments that mobilize tight joints and stretch tight ligaments.  They can also do different exercises to increase range of motion, and strengthen and support your wrist. Physical therapists are focused on getting long-term results and will teach you techniques to help prevent recurrence.
