What is Carpal Tunnel syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel syndrome? Carpal tunnel syndrome, also known as median nerve compression, is a condition characterized by hand numbness, tingling, or weakness. It is caused by pressure on your median nerve, which runs the length of your arm, passes through the carpal tunnel in your wrist, and ends in your hand.

Symptoms

Weakness when gripping objects with one or both hands
Pain or numbness in one or both hands
"Pins and needles" feeling in the fingers
Swollen feeling in the fingers
Burning or tingling in the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers
Pain or numbness that is worse at night, interrupting sleep

Causes

Repetitive maneuvers
Pregnancy, for example, because of edema or fluid retention
Inflammatory, degenerative, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid
Diabetes
Physical trauma, such as dislocation or fracture of the wrist
Lesions in the wrist
Cyst or tumor in the carpal tunnel
An overactive pituitary gland
Any kind of swelling or inflammation around the tendons
