What is “Hands On” Therapy?

Hands-on therapy is a type of physical therapy that involves physical manipulation and/or manual contact using the hands to treat an injury, disability, condition or musculoskeletal pain. Hands-on therapy focuses on the source of the problem, and the therapist has direct contact with the patient. Hands-on physical therapy does not use tools or devices instead the physical therapist's hands are used to apply pressure where it's needed to help relieve pain.

Hands-on therapy allows stretching of your muscles, joints, and ligaments. Hands-on therapy can also help break up adhesions and even realign scar tissue, which can get in the way of your body’s full range of motion. Physical therapists and occupational therapists often use hands-on therapy to help their patients ease swelling, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain.

Hands-on therapy techniques may include:

Depending on your symptoms, your physical or occupational therapist may recommend one of the following techniques or a combination of them. Hands-on therapy works to ease your discomfort and provide long-lasting results. Living with pain is not fun or easy. If you're questioning whether or not you can be a candidate for hands-on therapy, call Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy to schedule an appointment.
