What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy is the specific form of therapy addressed to helping individuals improve their ability to participate in and accomplish everyday activities. Occupational therapy offers a holistic approach working with the patient to help him work better within his environment. Occupational therapy has a variety of uses, from helping a child with a disability improve their ability to participate in school and social functions, to helping a patient recover after a serious injury or completing their everyday activities.

Occupational therapy can help with a number of conditions that coincide with aging. Occupational therapists can help manage arthritis by observing the patient and helping them adjust the way they do certain tasks to make them more comfortable and reduce pain. An occupational therapist can also help a patient increase their range of motion through certain exercises. There’s a lot an occupational therapist can do to help your elderly loved one improve their quality of life. There are even exercises that can be performed to help improve vision and cognitive skills to help patients stay sharp and active.

What can I expect?

During their first visit with an occupational therapist, the patient will be given an evaluation to examine their current state and determine a tailored program to help them achieve their goals.  The therapist may even watch the patient perform daily tasks to see how they can help improve their ability to do these tasks. The therapist will continue to work with the patient week after week getting the patient where they need to be.

In-home occupational therapy with one of our experienced therapists is one of the many services we offer here at Reddy Care. If you would like to know more or would like to schedule an appointment with one of our therapists, please give us a call!
