Whiplash: Symptoms & Care
Whiplash is a common injury after car accidents, sports collisions, or sudden impacts. While it may seem minor at first, it can lead to ongoing pain and stiffness if left untreated. The good news is that with proper care, most people recover fully.
What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head, which strains the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck. It is most often linked to rear-end car accidents but can also occur from sports injuries, falls, or other sudden impacts.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms usually appear within 24 hours and may include:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Limited range of motion
- Headaches (often starting at the base of the skull)
- Shoulder, upper back, or arm pain
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
- Fatigue, dizziness, or difficulty concentrating
Common Causes
- Car accidents (especially rear-end collisions)
- Contact sports
- Falls or physical trauma
- High-impact recreational activities
How Physical Therapy Helps
Physical Therapy plays a key role in recovery by reducing pain and restoring movement. Treatment may include:
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Manual therapy to improve mobility
- Postural correction
- Pain management techniques (heat, ice, or electrical stimulation)
The Role of Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy focuses on helping you return to daily activities safely. This may include:
- Modifying daily tasks to reduce strain
- Improving workstation ergonomics
- Managing fatigue and activity levels
- Supporting a safe return to work and hobbies
Therapists may also recommend a cervical support pillow to improve neck alignment during sleep.
