Adhesive capsulitis, AKA frozen shoulder

Frozen Shoulder

Adhesive capsulitis, otherwise known as frozen shoulder, is a condition where the tissue in your shoulder becomes stiff, and your range-of-motion becomes limited thus, leaving your shoulder “frozen”.

Frozen shoulder can come about due to a variety of reasons. Certain factors can make you more susceptible to joint inflammation, like weakened immune system, diabetes, and hormonal imbalances. Long periods of inactivity, such as in injury, or surgery, also makes you more vulnerable to inflammation and adhesions (bands of stiff tissue). This can cause scar tissue to form and lead to pain and stiffness.

Physical therapy is the most common treatment for frozen shoulder. Physical therapists will use a combination of modalities to increase the mobility of your shoulder and reduce the stiffness and pain. Treatment may include:

Your therapists will take into account your needs and your specific symptoms to combine the best treatments in your course of therapy.
