Autism: Signs, Causes & the Role of Therapy
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that shapes how a person communicates, behaves, and connects with the world around them. No two people with autism are exactly alike. The word "spectrum" reflects just how varied the experience can be. What remains consistent is that with the right understanding and support, people with autism can lead fulfilling, meaningful lives.
Common signs of autism
Signs typically emerge in early childhood, though they can sometimes go unnoticed until later in life. They may include:
- Delayed speech or limited use of eye contact and facial expression
- Repetitive behaviours such as hand-flapping, rocking, or lining up objects
- Sensory sensitivities being over- or under-responsive to lights, sounds, or textures
- Difficulty navigating social interactions or reading social cues
- Deeply focused interests in specific topics or subjects
What causes autism?
There is no single known cause of autism. Current research points to a combination of factors that influence brain development before and after birth, including:
- Genetic predisposition and hereditary factors
- Prenatal influences such as exposure to certain conditions during pregnancy
- Differences in how the brain develops structurally and functionally
It is important to note that autism is not caused by parenting style, vaccines, or personal choices; these are longstanding myths that research has firmly set aside.
How occupational and physical therapy help
While there is no cure for autism, therapy can significantly improve quality of life by building skills, confidence, and independence. Two of the most impactful approaches are:
Occupational therapy
- Builds fine motor skills and self-care abilities such as dressing, eating, and writing
- Supports sensory integration to help individuals better manage their environment
- Uses structured routines and play-based strategies to help children thrive at school and at home
Physical therapy
- Targets gross motor development including walking, balance, and coordination
- Strengthens posture, mobility, and physical stamina needed for everyday activities
- Reduces the risk of injury by improving body awareness and movement control
Early intervention is key. The sooner a child receives tailored therapeutic support, the greater the opportunity to build a strong foundation for communication, independence, and wellbeing.
