Benefits of Manual Therapy

Physical Therapy Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a type of physical therapy that uses hands-on pressure and joint manipulation to relieve muscle tension and pain. Manual therapy can be effective in the treatment of certain musculoskeletal conditions and helping patients improve their range of motion.

While manual therapy is a lesser-known physical therapy treatment, research shows it is an effective form of pain management. Patients with chronic lower back pain especially can experience great relief. Evidence suggests that it can also help increase flexibility and relax tight muscles.

So, what does manual therapy entail?

Manual therapy can be broken up into two categories, soft tissue work, and mobilization and manipulation. Soft tissue work is a type of treatment that involves the physical therapist placing pressure on different muscles and soft tissues. The idea is to increase circulation, break up scar tissue, and ease discomfort. Mobilization and manipulation is where your therapist, using different movements and techniques, works on getting your joints into position. This helps to improve flexibility and alignment and increases movement.

Manual therapy can be pretty versatile and can include a number of different exercises.  Some examples of manual therapy exercises are strain-counter strain, high velocity, low amplitude thrusting, and muscle energizing techniques. Your therapist will evaluate and recommend the best treatment based on your symptoms.
