Causes of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is physical discomfort which can be caused by the bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your shoulder. Damage to any of the structures in your shoulder can affect the shoulder joint and result in pain. Younger people can experience shoulder pain due to accidents and injuries. As you get older natural wear and tear occurs in the shoulder joint and at the rotator cuff tendons. For most people, shoulder pain will improve over time with physical therapy treatment.

Typical causes of shoulder pain include:

Each cause of shoulder pain has their own set of symptoms. Depending on the cause of your shoulder pain you may experience: pain in the shoulder joint, reduced movement, weakness in the shoulder/upper arm, sensation of pins and needles, and swelling or bruising.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational Therapy, our therapists can treat your shoulder pain. Your therapist can pinpoint the cause through different diagnostic techniques, including x-rays and a range of motion tests. Once your Physical therapist or Occupational therapist diagnoses the cause of your shoulder pain, they will create a program tailored to you to help relieve your pain. Your treatment modalities may include: manual therapy, myofascial release therapy, electrical stimulation, kinesiology taping, laser therapy, hands on therapy, and exercise prescription.
