Concussions

A concussion is known as mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). A concussion is a brain injury when the brain is violently shaken. Concussions may cause physical, behavioral or cognitive symptoms. You may experience a concussion at any age. Concussions may happen due to sports injuries, falls, motor vehicle accidents, physical abuse or domestic violence.

Recovery from a concussion can take several weeks, months or sometimes years. The recovery process depends on the cause, the severity of the injury and the person’s age. Symptoms of a concussion may occur immediately while others may take hours or months.

Physical symptoms of a concussion may include:

Emotional symptoms of a concussion may include:

Physical therapy can help concussions. At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy, a physical therapist will test neurological, orthopedic and cardiovascular systems. Other tests may include muscle strength, balance, coordination, sight, smell, hearing and memory.

Treatment plans for concussions are uniquely tailored to the patient's specific needs due to no two concussions being the same. A treatment plan may include vestibular rehabilitation (reduces dizziness & improves balance), manual therapy, massage therapy, exercise rehabilitation, patient education, rest, and restoring strength and endurance.
