February is National Cancer Prevention Month
February is National Cancer Prevention Month, a time to focus on how prevention, education, and healthy lifestyle choices can reduce cancer risk. According to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), about 40% of cancer cases are linked to preventable factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, excess body weight, and sun exposure.
Thanks to public health initiatives and improved screening, nearly 5.94 million cancer deaths were prevented between 1975 and 2020—demonstrating the powerful impact of prevention.
The Role of Physical & Occupational Therapy
Physical and Occupational Therapy support cancer prevention by promoting safe, regular movement and healthy daily habits. Staying active helps maintain a healthy weight, improves strength and endurance, and reduces sedentary behavior—all factors linked to lower cancer risk.
PTs and OTs also help individuals:
- Return safely to activity after illness or injury
- Build sustainable exercise routines
- Improve balance, mobility, and overall function
- Maintain independence and long-term wellness
Small Steps Make a Big Difference
Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, exercising regularly, protecting your skin, and staying up to date on screenings and vaccinations can significantly reduce cancer risk. Physical and occupational therapists play a key role in helping individuals adopt and maintain these habits safely.
Prevention Is a Team Effort
National Cancer Prevention Month reminds us that prevention works. Through education, research, and movement-based care, Physical and Occupational Therapy help empower individuals to take an active role in their long-term health and cancer risk reduction.
