Gait Training Improves your Balance!

Losing your balance can be scary and can lead to serious falls and injuries. A balance disorder refers to a condition that makes you feel dizzy or unsteady.

Balance disorders can develop as a result of an injury or disease affecting certain structures of the body like your inner ears, eyes, joints, and nervous system. Your sense of balance is dependent on a series of signals from these different organs and structures of your body to your brain, when these signals get interrupted it causes balance issues. Patients who are injured or recovering from surgery could be a greater risk for falls or balance problems. Your risk of balance issues and falls also increases as you age.

How can physical and occupational therapy improve your balance and prevent falls?

Along with treating any underlying medical condition, physical and occupational therapy can help patients regain strength and balance. Because physical therapists are experts in movement, can spot problems with your strength and posture that could be contributing to your balance issues.  They will develop a personalized program tailored for your needs. Treatment can include, targeted exercises to strengthen weakened muscles, stretches, and gait training.  Gait training is highly effective at helping patients improve their posture and stabilize their footing, preventing falls.

Physical and occupational therapists can make recommendations for any assistive aids that you would need. They can also recommend coping strategies that will improve your balance and help you deal with dizzy spells.

If you are looking for a good physical or occupational therapist, we have a great team at Reddy Care Physical and Occupational Therapy. Our therapists are extensively experienced in treating gait and balance issues. Call us today to find out more!
