Physical Therapy can help manage fibromyalgia symptoms.

Physical Therapy can help manage fibromyalgia symptoms

Fibromyalgia is a common chronic condition that can be debilitating for many. It is characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and other discomforts. Some may also experience changes in mood and difficulties with memory and concentration.

While the exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, current thinking is that it has to do with a problem with the central pain processing in the brain, where there could be increased sensitivity or perception of pain to a given trigger.  It may also be hereditary and tends to affect women more than men.  Many people experience their first fibromyalgia symptoms after a physically or emotionally traumatic event.

There, unfortunately, is no cure for fibromyalgia. Treatment is geared toward managing symptoms. Physical therapy is an effective option for treating most fibromyalgia symptoms. Physical therapists have a wide range of tools and exercises they can use to help you improve your quality of life if you are suffering from fibromyalgia pain.  They can work with you to develop a program that works to balance your body’s own ability to regulate nerve impulses and alleviate your symptoms.

Some treatments that a physical therapist will use include; muscle strengthening and range-of-motion exercises, a cardiovascular program consisting of light exercise and low-impact movement, and pain-reducing treatments such as, ice and heat therapy, trigger point injections and massage therapy.
