Physical therapy is the primary treatment for a herniated disc

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc is a relatively common condition that can occur anywhere along the spine, but most commonly affects the lower back and neck.

Your spine is made up of a series of bones called vertebrae. Each vertebra is cushioned by a disc with a soft jelly-like center. A herniated disc occurs when this jelly-like substance breaks through the tough exterior of the disc and irritates the surrounding nerves.

Symptoms of a herniated disc can include:

While some cases may require surgery or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy is the primary treatment for a herniated disc. Physical therapy will help relieve the pain and inflammation caused by the herniated disc. Your physical therapist will combine different modalities and treatments based on your needs and create a program that works for you. Targeted exercises and stretches can be used to improve range-of-motion, ultra-sound technology can help reduce deep muscle pain and inflammation, and other treatments like electrical stimulation and heat and ice therapy may be added to stimulate healing.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy, our experienced team of therapists can develop a program to help with your back pain. We can help you get relief from your discomfort and get you back to doing those things you love. To find out more about our physical and occupational services, give us a call today!
