Pinched Nerve Physical Therapy

Pinched nerve

A pinched or compressed nerve can cause severe and debilitating pain and without prompt treatment can become a more chronic problem and even can lead to permanent nerve damage.

Pinched nerves are a problem caused by pressure of the nerves from near by bone, cartilage, muscles, or tendons. It can develop after a sudden accident or injury or be the result of deterioration and wear and tear over time.  Other factors such as obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes can also result in a pinched nerve.

A pinched nerve can cause different symptoms depending on the nerve or area affected, but some symptoms may include:

While for many people, pinched nerves simply heal on their own with rest and some time, some may require further treatment. The first order of business is to work on relieving the inflammation, it’s important to refrain from carrying out activities that will aggravate it or make it worse. Physical therapy is a great noninvasive treatment to help relieve the symptoms and heal a pinched nerve.  Your physical therapist will work with you on an exercise program that will strengthen muscles and relieve nerve compression.  This in combination with other treatments like massage and manipulation can reduce pain and promote healing. Your therapist will evaluate you and determine the best treatment plan for you.
