Relief from your Sciatica Pain

Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica originates in the lower back and radiates down the buttocks and into the leg. The pain is typically experienced as a constant burning or shooting pain sensation. This can also be accompanied by numbness or tingling. Symptoms are usually one-sided, it’s rare that it would affect both legs.  Sciatica symptoms can often feel worse when sitting and pain can sometimes be relieved by walking.

Sciatica is often caused by a herniated disc in the lower back. The herniation puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. A bone spur can also cause irritation which can lead to sciatic pain. You can be a greater risk for sciatica if you are overweight, have diabetes, or have a job that strains your spine. Often sciatica develops gradually over time, not as the result of any sudden event or injury.

If you are experiencing sciatic symptoms, physical therapy is a safe and effective treatment that can help reduce pain and prevent a recurrence.  Your therapist can help improve your overall function and range of motion. Physical therapy treatment generally includes a combination of exercise and passive modalities. Your exercise program will consist of different strengthening, stretching, and aerobic movements.  Other treatments like ultrasound technology, and hot and cold application, can help reduce pain and inflammation.
