Treating your Shoulder Pain

Physical Therapy can reduce shoulder pain

Shoulder pain can be debilitating, when something goes wrong with your shoulders it can hamper your ability to move freely and can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort.  It can even cause a reduction of function in the arms and hands. Getting the right treatment, promptly, can make all the difference in getting you back to fully functioning and out of pain.

Your shoulder can become injured through manual labor, playing sports, even doing certain repetitive motions. Some diseases can even bring about pain that travels into the shoulder. As you get older, especially 60 and up, you are more likely to suffer issues with your shoulders. This is because as you age, the soft tissues surrounding the shoulder tend to degenerate.

In many instances, your shoulder pain can be managed at home. However, more serious cases may require medication and surgery. Physical therapy can also play a vital role in treating your shoulder pain. Using their knowledge of the body and musculoskeletal system, a physical therapist will help determine the cause of your shoulder pain and get you on a treatment plan to correct it.

Treatment with a physical therapist usually includes a program of exercises and stretches to help improve strength and range of motion. Using other techniques like myofascial release, electrical stimulation, and laser therapy, they can help you reduce pain and stimulate healing.  Patients may also need to make changes to their daily routines to prevent further injury. Your therapist will design a tailored program based on your specific case.
