Vertigo

Vertigo is a vestibular disorder which makes you feel a rocking or spinning sensation. Vertigo can last for a few hours, days or even weeks. Vertigo is often caused by an inner ear problem and you may experience vertigo with certain head movements. Some of the most common causes of vertigo are Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, Vestibular neuritis, stroke, tumors, and medications.

Symptoms that accompany vertigo are:

Spinning sensation
Feeling unbalanced
Nausea
Vomiting
Headaches
Sweating
Ringing in the ears

Vertigo and balance problems are more common and dangerous for people 65 and older due to higher risk of accidental falls and injuries. Falls are the leading cause of hospital admission and accidental death. Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a type of physical therapy which is known to strengthen the vestibular system. VRT uses exercises that result in gaze and gait stabilization. Vestibular rehab is recommended for patients who have recurrent bouts of vertigo.
