Vestibular Disorders

Vestibular - Physical Therapy

Vestibular disorders relate to the inner ear and how it helps you balance. Problems with your inner ear can cause dizziness, visual disturbances, and affects your balance.  Conditions related to this, such as vertigo, can be significantly improved by a course of vestibular rehab.

What is vestibular-rehab?

Vestibular rehabilitation is delivered by a trained physical therapist and is designed to handle symptoms of balance and vertigo issues. There are several ways and treatments they can use depending on your specific symptoms and vestibular issues you are having. For example, a series of head and eye movements, known as Cawthorne head exercises, can help decrease the sensitivity of the nerves.  Your therapist will start with an assessment and determine the best course of treatment for you.  Some other vertigo treatments include:

  • Epley Maneuver, whereby performing specific head movements, the physical therapist can move the crystals in the ear that are causing vertigo.

  • Safe exercise and balance training using the Solo-Step Overhead Track and Harness system which allows you to safely move around without falling.

  • Other gaze stabilization exercises.

If you are in the tri-state area and are looking to get started on a vestibular rehab program, our team at Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy can help. Our therapists have extensive expertise in treating balance disorders and vertigo using vestibular rehab. To find out more about the specific treatments we have available and how we can help, give us a call today and get started with a consultation.
