What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the backbone also known as the spine. Scoliosis causes a C-shaped or an S-shaped curvature which alters a person’s alignment and posture. Scoliosis can appear at any age and can range from mild to severe.

Treatment for scoliosis may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, bracing and/or surgery. Your physical and occupational therapy treatment plan is based on your age, severity of scoliosis, and the type of scoliosis.

At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy, your physical and occupational therapist will work with you to develop and create a unique treatment plan tailored for your specific needs. Physical therapy treatment plans may include massage therapy, manual therapy, myofascial therapy, electrical stimulation, range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, heat and ice modalities, stretches and education. A physical therapist can help you improve strength in the parts of the body that may have weakened due to misalignment.

Occupational therapists may help patients with scoliosis by recommending cushions and customized seating to improve posture control and stability. They may also recommend modifying your home environment to help with your safety and independence. For example, shower equipment, grab bars installed in the bathroom, canes and/or walkers. Occupational therapy is designed to help scoliosis patients lead a more normal and physically active life.

If you or a loved one was diagnosed with scoliosis, call our office today or schedule an appointment online.
