Whiplash

Whiplash is a forceful, rapid back and forth movement of the neck. Whiplash is commonly caused by sports injuries, physical abuse, rear ended car accidents (MVA) and other types of traumas. Whiplash injuries can range from mild to severe.

Signs and symptoms of whiplash may include:

Loss of range in motion of neck
Headaches
Pain in shoulders
Fatigue
Dizziness
Neck pain/stiffness
Sleep disturbance
Blurred vision
Memory problems
Difficulty concentrating

It is important to beware of symptoms for whiplash after a trauma since symptoms may occur a few days later. If the injury is mild you may only need exercise and pain medication while other people may have long lasting chronic neck pain and other complications.

Your physical and occupational therapy initial evaluation may include assessments of your neck and shoulders range of motion, any tenderness, assessing reflexes and managing pain.
