Gait Training

Physical Therapy can help your gait!

Your gait is your manner or style of walking; gait analysis or training is the examination of a person’s gait and their gait cycle and offering ways to improve it so that they can walk safely and with greater ease.  You may have experienced going to a shoe store and having an associate examine the way you walk and recommend the right pair of running shoes for you based on this. Gait training with a physical therapist takes it further, they are experts in movement, trained to recognize any abnormalities or issues with the way you walk. They may observe your gait visually or record it and watch in slow motion, they can then provide the best exercises and treatments to help you.  

 

In certain cases, injury, illness, or surgery can cause abnormalities in your gait.  The pain or injury, for instance, may have been causing you to favor one foot over the other, which could affect your gait even after the injury has healed. Gait analysis and training have a number of benefits, it can improve your leg and foot movement, strengthen weakened muscles, improve joint flexibility, relieve pain, improve posture, and as a result, help you move faster and easier. Gait training can also decrease your chances of falling, allowing you to feel more confident and aware of your feet. After your initial evaluation, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan for you, including targeted exercises and stretches.  Your progress will be periodically reviewed, and any needed adjustments can be made. Your therapist may examine you further to determine and fix why you are walking with the abnormality and get to the root of the issue.
