How can physical therapy help with shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain is a common and frustrating problem.  The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body, making it particularly susceptible to injury. A group of four muscles and their tendons, called the rotator cuff, give it its range-of-motion. Swelling, damage, or bone changes around the rotator cuff can cause shoulder pain.

The most common cause of shoulder pain happens when rotator cuff tendons become trapped under the bony area in the shoulder. This is called rotator cuff tendonitis or bursitis.

Physical therapy can play a vital role in treating and healing shoulder pain. A physical therapist can pinpoint the cause of your shoulder pain through different diagnostic techniques, including x-rays and rage-of-motions tests.

Once the cause of your shoulder pain is determined, your therapist will create a program tailored to help manage or fully eliminate your pain.

One part of your treatment could include exercise to improve stiffness and range of motion. Exercise can be beneficial for managing the pain of osteoarthritis. Other treatments that may be of benefit are techniques such as heat and ice therapy, myofascial release, electrical stimulation, and laser therapy.
