Management of your Neuropathy

neuropathy

There are many different types of nervous system disorders that require clinical care by a practitioner. Peripheral neuropathy is a specific nervous system condition where your peripheral nerves have become damaged, whether it be from injury or an underlying disease.

Your peripheral nerves are the nerves that branch out from your spinal cord to send information back and forth from your brain, to the rest of your body. These nerves play an essential role in muscle movements, sensations, and the functions of various organ systems, such as your bowel and bladder.

The symptoms of neuropathy vary depending on the nerves affected. Some common symptoms include pain, tingling or numbness, sensitivity to touch, loss of muscle control, lack of coordination, heat intolerance, loss of bladder control, and alterations in blood pressure.  It can affect one or several nerves. For example, carpal tunnel is a type of neuropathy that affects only one nerve, the median nerve.

Physical therapy can play a crucial role in the management of your neuropathy, helping you reduce pain and restore function. Due to the multiple causes of neuropathy, treatment will vary. Your physical therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan to fit your needs. Treatment may include aerobic exercise, a flexibility program, and balance and coordination work.

If you are experiencing neuropathic pain or symptoms, our team at Reddy Care Physical and Occupational Therapy has a lot of experience treating different neurological conditions.  Using a combination of physical therapy and electrotherapy we can help you reduce pain and improve your quality of life.
