Neurological Diseases Can be Managed by a Physical Therapist!

Neurological Conditions can be managed by a physical therapist

A neurological disease is typically defined as any disorder of the nervous system. The brain, the spinal cord, and nerves, work together to make up the nervous system. It is essential in controlling daily function.  If something goes wrong with your nervous system, basic things like breathing, swallowing and moving, can become difficult.  It can also affect your memory or mood.

There are over 600 different types of neurological diseases. Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and multiple sclerosis are a few examples of neurological conditions or diseases. As there are so many different variations and types of neurological conditions, there is not one specific cause to attribute it to. Certain conditions, like diabetes, can cause nerve damage.  It could also be the result of injury or infection.

Symptoms of certain neurological diseases can be managed by treatment with a physical therapist. For example, patients with Alzheimer’s, by participating in physical therapy, can experience a slow in the decline of cognitive function by increasing the blood flow to the brain through exercise. In general, physical therapy can increase muscle strength, help with balance and coordination, and overall reduce pain. There’s a lot of treatment a physical therapist can do to help improve a patient’s quality of life.  Treatment may include, aerobic exercise, strength training, balance and coordination work, and maybe even electrotherapy for pain.
