Physical Therapy for Scoliosis

improved scoliosis symptoms with physical therapy

Scoliosis is a condition that describes a sideways curvature of the spine. It is often diagnosed in childhood or early adolescence.  Depending on the severity, this curvature can cause back pain, cosmetic issues such as a hip being higher than the other, and even breathing difficulty.

While the underlying cause is not always clear, the symptoms of scoliosis can be markedly helped through physical therapy, especially when caught early. Physical therapy can help retain your body to function better with your particular alignment issues. It can also help you improve your range-of-motion and increase strength in the areas of your body that may have weakened due to your misalignment.

While every physical therapy program will be different and tailored to your specific needs there are some common components to a successful course of therapy. These include:

Physical therapy can also be used in conjunction with more aggressive treatments to augment them and increase success.  Proper treatment early may help prevent worsening of the curve and decrease the risk of other health complications.
