Post-Stroke Rehabilitation

Post-Stroke Rehabilitation

A stroke happens when something changes how blood flows through the brain. Blood brings oxygen and nutrients to brain cells. If brain cells are without oxygen for a period, they can suffer and even die. There are two main types of strokes, an ischemic stroke is caused by a clot or blockage to an artery leading to the brain, or a hemorrhagic stroke which is when a blood vessel breaks and causing bleeding in the brain.

It’s important to know the signs of a stroke and get treatment quickly. Some signs of a stroke are numbness in the extremities or face (especially on one side), sudden confusion or trouble speaking, and sudden severe headache. Other symptoms are nausea, double vision, and drowsiness. Treatment for stroke usually include medications, surgery, and rehabilitation.

Physical and occupational therapy can be a crucial component of treatment after stroke to help patients get back on their feet. Physical therapy can help improve balance, coordination, and help the patient to try to relearn simple motor activities. This usually involves specific exercises and training. Occupational therapy can help a patient become more independent and help them come up with simpler ways to accomplish their daily activities.

Helping patients recover after stroke is something we proudly assist with here at Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy.  Our team of physical and occupational therapists can even come and treat in the home, making recovery as smooth as possible.
