PT & OT Covid Rehabilitation

PT & OT Covid Rehabilitation

Critical care doctors have informed us that some Covid-19 patients may suffer long-term physical, cognitive and emotional effects.   Researchers in Hong Kong have said that recovered coronavirus patients can be left with damaged lungs. “In some patients, lung function could decline by about 20 to 30% after recovery,” says Dr. Owen Tsang Tak-yin, medical director of the Infectious Diseases Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital in Hong Kong. Tsang added, however, that patients can do cardiovascular exercises, to improve their lung capacity over time.

In addition to our pulmonary program, Reddy Care is offering a  Covid-19 Rehabilitation Program. Rehabilitating patients with the decreased ability to breathe and function is often a neglected area of healthcare; however physical and occupational therapy can make a big difference.  The benefits of exercises for people with “normal” lungs are well known, however, there are extra benefits found in people who have respiratory diseases. Physical therapists can not only reduce symptoms in patients with respiratory diseases through breathing and airway clearance techniques but with the use of gradually progressing exercises they can improve a patient’s quality of life significantly.

Our Covid-19 program also includes Occupational Therapy!  OTs play a vital role in improving functional endurance for Activities of Daily Living and basic self care.  OTs will also assess for equipment and safety, provide caregiver training,  as well as assist with community re-entry and work related functions when appropriate. Reddy Care uses a team approach with both OT and PT to meet the needs of the patient.
