What does Post-Operative Rehabilitation Entail?

Post Operative Physical Therapy

Whether you are recovering from a hip surgery, knee surgery, or back surgery, you will need a rehabilitation program to help you get back on your feet.  Post-operative rehabilitation is a specific type of physical therapy designed aid in post-surgery recovery. Physical therapists are specially trained to identify the bodies limitations and are knowledgeable on surgical procedures and how to treat post-surgical patients.  Post-op treatment with a physical therapist can improve the overall health of a patient, ensure long term success, and prevent re-injury from occurring.

What does post-operative rehabilitation entail?

Your treatment plan with a physical therapist will vary greatly depending on the surgery that was done and your specific goals. Most often, it includes exercises to help regain muscle strength, and stretches to improve flexibility and range of motion. Your therapist may decide to use electrical stimulation to stimulate muscle function. Treatment can also include massage therapy to help minimize scar tissue formation. Again, it will greatly depend on the surgery being done, for example, a patient who just had a knee replacement surgery, would get exercises specific to the knee, and leg, and potentially work on balance training. Your therapist will tailor the program to fit your needs.

Taking proper care and getting the right post-operative regime after surgery is super important to a smooth recovery. Your post-surgery physical therapy can help you regain mobility and function, minimize scar tissue, and improve blood circulation, which can reduce the risk of post-surgery blood clots.
