What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can be an invaluable part of recovering from an injury or illness. A well-designed physical therapy treatment plan can help a patient return to their prior level of functioning, help prevent further injury, and improve the patient’s overall health and wellbeing.  Physical therapy has a variety of uses and can be used to treat a wide range of different conditions and age groups. Some common reasons patients see a physical therapist are as follows:

What does a Physical Therapy program consist of?

Physical therapy will usually begin with a consultation to determine the best course of treatment based on your specific case. Exercise is usually an important component of any therapy program.  Different exercises and stretches will often be used to help improve strength and range of motion and flexibility.

People are often surprised to find out that massage is usually used by physical therapists as part of treatment.  Massage is used in a therapeutic setting to improve circulation, reduce pain, lessen swelling and inflammation, and accelerate healing.

Some other passive treatments your therapist may use are electrical stimulation to promote healing, and cupping therapy which is designed to improve blood flow to the injured area.
