Physical Therapy for Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's Disease and Physical Therapy

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects certain neurons in a specific area of the brain. Symptoms generally develop slowly over time but can be debilitating. Patients may experience tremors, gait and balance problems. In certain cases it can lead to depression or apathy, loss of smell, and even cognitive impairment.

Although symptoms can be difficult, with the right treatment, it is still possible to have a good quality of life. There is no standard treatment for Parkinson’s, it will vary based on symptoms. Often it will require medicine and lifestyle changes, like getting more exercise.

One of the ways patients can get the most out of their exercise and treatment is to work with a physical therapist. Physical therapists are experts in motion and can help with a tailored program of exercises and stretches to help the patient improve mobility, flexibility and balance. Through a process called gait training, a physical therapist can improve the gait or the walking process of a patient with Parkinson’s, which can help with their coordination and decrease risk of falls.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy we have an expert team of therapist that can help you manage your Parkinson’s symptoms.
