Pinched Nerve

Physical therapists and occupational therapists can help relieve nerve pain

A pinched nerve happens when too much pressure or force is put on an area of nerve. This causes damage to the nerve and interrupts regular signals to the brain. There are a range of potential reasons a pinched nerve could occur. A herniated disk could be compressing the nerve, there could be arthritis in the area that is affecting the nerve.  Sports injuries, or injury from repetitive actions, could also cause a pinched nerve.

Symptoms of a pinched nerve can include pain, tingling, numbness, loss of function, pins and needles feeling, among others. Pinched nerves can occur anywhere in the body, but very commonly affect the neck and back.

Relieving inflammation by resting and avoiding strenuous activity so you give your tissues a chance to rest, is often the first stage of treatment. Physical and Occupational therapy can also be effective in the treatment of pinched nerves. A physical or occupational therapist can fit you for a splint or brace to help reduce movement in the area. They can also recommend and help you with exercises that strengthen muscles and relieve nerve compression. They can carry out therapies like massage and manipulation to help relieve pressure and pain. Occupational therapists focus on helping patients carry out specific task and manage pain, so they can help patients recover and get back to their daily routine after a pinched nerve.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a pinched nerve, it’s important to seek treatment quickly. Long-term pressure on a nerve can lead to more chronic problems.
